How Novo Nordisk Streamlined Healthcare in Sri Lanka with a User-Friendly HMIS

Novo Nordisk needed a hospital system that connected doctors, nurses, and patients efficiently. We designed a compliant, accessible HMIS that improved operations, patient care, and workflow across local hospitals.

How Novo Nordisk Streamlined Healthcare in Sri Lanka with a User-Friendly HMIS

Project Overview

Novo Nordisk launched a campaign in Sri Lanka to raise awareness about diabetes and improve healthcare delivery in underdeveloped regions. As part of their initiative, they partnered with the Sri Lankan government to deploy a Hospital Management Information System (HMIS) across local hospitals. Over three months, we worked closely with them to design and develop a system that would connect patients, nurses, and doctors seamlessly.

Our team handled the design, front-end development, and clickable prototype using React. The system was built to record core patient vitals, medical history, prescriptions, and follow-up visits. Doctors, nurses, and administrative staff could access a patient’s complete health history, schedule follow-ups, and make referrals efficiently.

Accessibility and local compliance were top priorities, so we strictly followed the Sri Lankan government guidelines for content structure and accessibility, ensuring the HMIS was usable by all staff members.

The Challenge

Deploying the HMIS in Sri Lankan hospitals came with several challenges. First, the system had to connect multiple user roles, such as receptionists, nurses, doctors, and departments, so information flowed seamlessly from patient check-in to treatment and follow-up. Any misalignment could lead to inefficiency or errors in patient care.

Second, we had to ensure full accessibility. Hospitals in underdeveloped regions vary in infrastructure and technical expertise, so the system had to be simple, intuitive, and accessible to all staff, including those less familiar with digital tools.

Third, compliance with local regulations was critical. All content, data handling, and workflows had to follow Sri Lankan government guidelines to ensure accuracy, privacy, and legal compliance.

Finally, the system had to record and retain complete patient histories, allowing doctors and nurses to access previous visits, prescriptions, and test results instantly. The challenge was designing a solution that captured this information clearly without overwhelming users.

The Solution

We approached the project by creating a user-centered HMIS that connected all hospital staff in a simple, intuitive workflow. Using React, we developed a responsive, fast front-end that allowed receptionists and nurses to log patient vitals and medical history efficiently. Doctors could view records, write prescriptions, schedule follow-ups, and refer patients to other departments directly within the system.

We also created a clickable prototype to validate the workflows and ensure ease of use before deployment. Accessibility was built into the system from the ground up, following Sri Lankan government guidelines for content structure and usability. This ensured that every staff member could navigate the system effortlessly, regardless of technical experience.

By combining thoughtful design, intuitive interfaces, and compliant workflows, we delivered a system that was both efficient and user-friendly, improving patient care while maintaining regulatory compliance.

The Result

The HMIS successfully connected patients, doctors, and departments, allowing all staff to access complete medical histories in real time. This streamlined hospital operations and reduced delays in patient care. Doctors could now refer patients, schedule follow-ups, and track ongoing treatments efficiently, improving continuity of care.

The system’s accessible design and adherence to local guidelines ensured that every hospital staff member could use it confidently, even in resource-constrained environments. By providing a reliable digital record of patient health, the HMIS supported better decision-making and allowed Novo Nordisk and hospital authorities to track campaign impact effectively.

Overall, the project enhanced healthcare delivery in Sri Lanka, improved operational efficiency in hospitals, and strengthened Novo Nordisk’s mission to raise awareness and provide better care for diabetes patients.

Idea Fueled has been an incredible partner in bringing our HMIS platform to life. From the very beginning, they took the time to understand our requirements and challenges, then translated them into a clean, intuitive design. Their team not only delivered outstanding UI/UX but also handled the frontend development with precision and attention to detail. The interactive prototype they created helped us validate our ideas quickly and align stakeholders before moving to full development.
